1929 Essex Super Six 2-Door Sedan

Text and photos by GNYR Florida Correspondent Marty Goffe

The 14th annual Sweet Corn Fiesta, hosted by the Western Palm Beach County Farm Bureau, took place on April 27th at the South Florida Fair Grounds.

Looking like a county fair, this event drew thousands to many attractions for both adults and kids including the annual national corn shucking contest and the national corn eating contest. Winners of each of these contests went home with cash prizes and the corn eating champ went home with a stomach full of corn in addition to the cash.

As usual, car owners of the Vintage Auto Club and friends supplied eighteen antique and collectible vehicles to the delight of the visitors. The oldest car on display was a 1929 Essex Super Six two door sedan known in that era as a coach — in beautiful condition. A 1934 Mercedes 500 roadster repro attracted much attention as well as an Amphicar looking as if it was ready to “go for a swim!”

A “non-car” present was a 2009 Spider by CanAm which is a three wheel motorcycle having two wheels in front for more stability. Another car present, not seen too often was a 2007 Saturn Sky roadster. Visitors who looked at the cars had a grand time telling life stories of the times they had when the current collectible cars were daily drivers. Car owners and passengers were treated to hot dogs and hot sweet corn for lunch and all at the Sweet Corn Fiesta had a chance to buy fresh corn delivered at the show in refrigerated trailers at prices substantially less than local retail outlets, Many visitor’s cars as well as show cars went home with bushels of freshly picked sweet corn.
